In co-operation with the Federal Environment Agency (UBA), Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland BUND ('German union for environmental protection and conservation'), BUNDjugend (BUND's youth organsation), and Karstadt Warenhaus GmbH a project was created that aims at promoting environmental consciousness in children, particularly in the age group from four to nine. The German colouring and reading book 'A day with Clemens Clever' (German title: "Unterwegs mit Clemens Clever"), which was created for this purpose, is to inspire children in a playful and emotional way to protect nature and the environment.

The book follows Clemens, the spiky, friendly eponymous hero, his family, and friends in word and pictures through their everyday life and shows - in passing - how you can do positive things for the environment and nature.

The colouring book was presented by the former Federal Minister of Consumer Protection Renate Künast at the World Children's Day in Berlin on 21 September 2002.

Obviously, the colouring book can not tell all the adventures of Clemens Clever, therefore all children up to the age of nine were invited to draw an episode in the everyday life of Clemens. Attractive prices were waiting for the best entries. Roughly 600,000 colouring books were distributed nationally and internationally, and therefore it came as no surprise that approximately 20,000 children took part with their creative entries. On 11 July 2003, Germany's Environment Minister Jürgen Trittin awarded prizes to the ten best pictures in the department store Wertheim Berlin. The winner received an adventure weekend with their family and school class on an ecological farm near Nördlingen. The winners in 2nd to 10th place each received a bicycle and a cycling helmet.

2008: an updated form of the environmental colouring book was handed out in stores with the help of cooperation partners, the Federal Environment Agency (UBA) and the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN), as part of the Ecological start to the school year campaign.
